From June 12th to July 17th of this year, we ran another season of really successful spey instruction programs at Alaska West.

Since swinging flies on two-handed rods tends to be the favorite method for targeting our chrome kings, we invite the best of the best in the spey fishing world to teach our guests the finer points of spey casting. This year, Dec Hogan, Charles St. Pierre, George Cook and Brian Niska were all on hand to help our guests learn the ‘ways to the spey’. We love spey casting for a whole bunch of reasons, and we believe that there’s no better place to learn, or to hone the skills that you’ve already got.

It’s OK to be a beginner.

Guests who fish with us during our king season get our normal 10-hour fishing days, but they get spey instruction too. This year’s programs included a few group casting sessions at the end of the day, but the focus was more on one-on-one instruction, with our instructors pairing up with interested guests and helping them with their casting in the best situation of all–fishing through a run that just happens to hold chrome kings.
It’s OK to be an expert, too.

We’ll be running our spey instruction program again during our 2010 season at Alaska West. Those dates are June 11 – July 16. Most of our weeks are full, but we’ve got a few openings, and we maintain wait lists as well. If you’re interested in learning to spey cast, or in perfecting your casting, and you want to work with the best of the best, drop us a line!
