Trout Spey Week at Alaska West – July 20 – 27, 2012

Trout Spey Week

This page gives a short overview of Alaska West and our 2012 Trout Spey Week, presented with Howard Cole and High Country Flies.  There’s much more information about all these topics available on our web site – but this page and the links at the bottom are a great place to start.

Alaska West Introduction

Alaska West is located on the Kanektok River in Western Alaska. We fish for all five species of Pacific salmon, as well as rainbow trout, dolly varden and grayling. Our guests stay with us at the lodge each night and go fishing each day with two anglers per guide fishing out of 16 foot jet boats.

2012 Trout Spey Week

From July 20 – 27th, we’ll be hosting a trout spey instruction program hosted by Howard Cole from High Country Flies in Jackson Hole.  Howard was an instructor for André Puyan’s Fly Fishing school on the Henry’s Fork for a number of years.  He’s now a great resource on two-handed rods and techniques, especially focused on trout.

We’ll present instruction on casting and fishing light two-handed rods, in both group and one-on-one formats.  First-time spey casters in our schools learn the ropes quickly, and experienced spey casters polish their skills by working with the real experts.  Each day will combine opportunities to improve spey fishing skills with quality fishing time on one of the most productive fisheries on the planet – Western Alaska’s Kanektok River.

Trout Fishing at Alaska West

Our rainbow trout fishery at Alaska West is an amazing resource, with beautiful trout feeding on a wide range of food sources.  These trout love eating swung flies, so the fishing lends itself perfectly to fishing sculping, leech, smolt and even mouse patterns on short spey and switch rods.

Our 2012 Trout Spey Week costs $5000 per person, plus travel and gratuties.

Our Accommodations

We call our accommodations ‘comfortable but casual’. We pride ourselves on a very high level of service and on delivering a great experience during your stay, but we are not trying to be a ‘luxury lodge’. The atmosphere is relaxing and we’re not too worried about formalities.

Travel

Getting to Alaska West means flying to Anchorage and then taking a charter flight that we run from Anchorage to the lodge.
