Fishing is always better than not fishing, regardless of how intimidating the weather forecast is. Luckily for the ambitious winter angler, there is some great gear currently available to help keep you on the water during even the coldest of days. Here are 3 of our favorite fishing items for those times when the thermometer reading is scary low.
- Simms Windbloc Fold Over Mitts. Fly Fishing while wearing gloves can be difficult but also a necessity on some windy, single digit days. These gloves provide warmth thanks to the Polartec fleece fabric while also including a fold over feature to aid in any tasks requiring extra dexterity. Knots will need to be tied so having access to bare fingers is very helpful. Once you finish any tasks that require that extra dexterity, fold the gloves back over and get those fingers warm. These gloves offer surprisingly good grip and even interior pockets to put hand warmers.
- Patagonia Nano Air Pants. It is no secret that we like to swing flies which more often than not involves standing waist deep in some water with temps that hover just above freezing. For this you need an insulated layer under your waders. The Nano Air Pants offer a warm and breathable solution for comfort on even the coldest of days with a low profile that keeps you from feeling too bulky or limiting your range of motion.
- Electric hand warmers. With these you will never need to by single use, disposable hand warmers again. Our personal favorite is the Thermocharge from Celestron. The shock proof device hooks up to a USB charger and give you 6 hours of continuous heat. The small shape fits perfectly in wader pockets or sleeves. Might as well hang onto something warm as your flies swing!
