Today was different from yesterday in a couple of ways.
One, the wind was back…not sure what God I didn’t appeal to last night…could have been many, but obviously the Wind God was not on my list of Gods I was begging to. Two, the clouds….seriously…what have I done wrong this year? I went to Church a couple of times, flipped some time and dollars to some charities and even gave up some of the distilled goodness that has helped form the person I am today…. Regardless, cotton candy floating through the sky is a sweet, fluffy thought….UNTIL…you are relying on the sun that lay behind those sugary puffs to illuminate the fish you are after.
After a breakfast that was fit for a king…and a pooch named LD…you have to check out this dog…see upcoming entries, we headed for the launch. Boats in the water, anglers loaded on boats, MASSIVE amounts of gear loaded and locked. Weather is grand! We get to the first flat and Karen and I are hooking bonefish on a timely schedule.
These fish are happy to eat, and they are very interesting to fight. It appears that it takes them a moment to realize they are hooked, but once they do…you can say goodbye to 50-75 yards of backing immediately. Strong fish, very broad shouldered and spunky…kinda like the women I am into. Anyhow, I digress.
It was noon and our friends, the cotton candy clouds show back up. I am not sure about anyone else, but my fish viewing ability is shite (says Simon G….a Brit) when the clouds are out. For the next 2 hours…lights on…lights off….lights on….lights off… It felt a lot like camp….someone screwing around until the counselor busts them! All the while, our steadfast guide (Josie) spots the fish and we cast to the point he guides us. Most of the time, if we did what he said…Yank, Yank, Yank….fish on!
Unless you know someone I don’t, weather is not something we can control. However, being in the hands of someone with patience and sympathy is what it is all about. Karen and I were so happy with the day…so happy with the fish…so happy with the food…and yes, LD the leg-humper….we were giggling like school kids at the dock upon our return. Then we get back to camp for Conch Fritters, Pizza, Rum and assorted juices…Uhm….Travis, we are going to need another week……
Stay tuned as, I am sure, things will only heat up.
